ABC du RésidentABC du Résident is an organization set up to help English speaking people who have settled in Brittany, have holiday houses in Brittany or who are thinking of moving to Brittany. THE AIMIts aim is to help people to integrate into the French community. It is run by a committee made up of French professionals from various disciplines and ex patriots who have lived in France for some time. Where possible information is given in the form of leaflets. Where specific advice is requested people are given the name or names of French professionals who can answer the query/queries. Open meetings are held each year to advise on a variety of subjects. Each spring we hold an open meeting about tax returns. It is held before the returns are due to be submitted, to explain the changes from the previous year’s return, and what is required whether people pay tax in France or not. Each year we remind newcomers that the French authorities will assume that the house they live in is their second home unless they go to their local tax office and declare where they pay tax. We tell people that unless they do so, they will be liable for capital gains tax when they sell the house. Other open meetings cover matters such as Inheritance, Insurance, Capital Gains Tax and personal experiences. We find that with a moving population these subjects are popular and necessary.ABC du Résident is supported by the bi-monthly magazine “Talking Point” which contains Real Life Stories written by expats, IT information, Financial & Legal Pointers, Gardening, Articles, Recipes, Club Reports, Restaurant & Wine Reviews, Crossword, Suduko and Commercial Business Advertising. Our area of influence is centred around the areas of Baud, Vannes, Auray, Bubry and Lorient, as well as that covered by “Talking Point”. This has to be, so that we can recommend which professionals to contact for advice. The team, however, is very willing to discuss with others the setting up of similar committees elsewhere. In some cases this has already happened. ABC du Résident is not an English Club. It is an organization that encourages people to learn to speak French so that they can go themselves to professional people to ask for information, and so that they can fully enjoy living in Brittany. | ||||||||||
