As the number of expatriates has grown over the past decade, there has also been a growing trend for people to move back to their home countries after periods living abroad.
There are many reasons why expats choose to go back to their home country, but the main reasons are economic pressure, political changes or instability, social changes and new occupational commitments. Among older expats the main reason to return home is because they miss family and friends, while skilled professionals returning home do so mainly because of the end of their pre-determined period abroad.
Many repatriates find the transition of returning home to be more stressful and difficult than the original move abroad. Being back in familiar surroundings and not having the sense of newness, regarding cultures and experiences, can cause many repatriates to become uneasy with their old life and, in many cases, to seek out the expatriate communities in their home countries.
