Progress in Life and Education

An effective, challenging and enjoyable education for students with specific learning difficulties

About the School

The Olive Tree International School has been developed as a direct and personal response to the difficulty faced by a number of students in International education here in the South of France.

Our aims and objectives are:
Why an alternative school?
The development of literacy skills can be a long and frustrating process for students with specific learning difficulties. From Middle school onwards these are precisely the skills that students are expected to use for learning and expressing what they know and understand. Classroom and homework activities rely heavily on the effective use of skills that Dyslexic students are still struggling to build and master.

As time passes the discrepancy between what students are expected to do and understand, and what they have been able to achieve, widens. School can become a frustrating and negative experience which in turn can impact upon self esteem, confidence, behaviour, motivation and even relations at home.

Our Teaching philosophy

Students are encouraged to use natural talents, creativity and all forms of ‘intelligence’ as alternative routes to developing knowledge and understanding.

At the same time they benefit from intensive and specialised help to develop essential literacy skills.
Expectations are realistic and achievable to foster confidence and motivate students to strive for further success. Skills and knowledge grow in a sequential and cumulative way.

We believe that students should also understand the process of learning, what is real understanding and be given plenty of opportunity to develop thinking skills and problem solving. Action, challenge and inquiry set in meaningful and motivating contexts are essential aspects of our approach to teaching and learning.

The Verdon Regional Park has been chosen as our setting to maximise opportunities for the active learning of history, geography and science outside of the traditional classroom.

The School Day
The school day is organised to help students best use their energies and concentrate effectively. Morning classes are followed by lunch and a rest/free time period after which students take part in a programme of art or sporting activities (animation). Drama features on a weekly basis, during the year students may also participate in football, hockey, mountain biking, accrobranch, juggling, pottery, discovering how a farm works and ecology. Teaching then resumes from 15.00-17.00. Students are also expected to dedicate some of their evening time to personal study, a chance to review the day’s lessons, work on individual literacy programmes or do on going project work.

Sport and Outdoor activities

Personal development and achievement are fostered through weekly participation in sporting activities. Instruction focuses, at an individual level, on the development of skills and techniques to improve performance and progress. With the careful guidance and supervision of specially qualified instructors children are encouraged to take initiative, recognise and take responsibility and make decisions for themselves and their group.

On Wednesday afternoon students have the chance to participate in canoeing, kayaking, sailing, horse riding, tennis, hiking, swimming, lifesaving, rock climbing and rafting. During their first year children begin to identify sports they enjoy and would like to develop further during the second year. In some sports students can work towards diplomas, accredited by relative French sporting federations.

This gives anstudents a valuable sense of achievement and encourages progression and success.

Weekly and Full Boarding
Children board in Quinson, staying in one of the local Gîtes, La Cherine, La Grande Roquette or Gite L'Escargot. All are newly built or renovated and fully equipped. As boarders our students learn how to get along with others, the importance of respect, communication and taking responsibility for themselves and their belongings. Students are expected to help out with daily tasks. They are taught the essential aspects of good nutrition; with the guidance of their house parent they plan their weekly menu together.

During sporting, leisure activities and regular social evening students can mix with other children of their own age from outside of the school. Social evenings are organised around various themes, games nights, network computer games, videos and juggling workshops.
Students are supervised at all times by our experienced and qualified house parent, Delphine Philip.

About the Location

The school is located in Quinson in the heart of the Verdon Regional Natural Park just over an hour and a half from Nice, in a small village that captures all the charm and beauty of Haute Provence.
Quinson is situated on the banks of the Verdon where the lavender fields of the Plateau de Valensole meet limestone cliffs at the lower end of Gorge de Verdon. The perfect location for sporting and outdoor activities.

The area has a rich and fascinating history, and Quinson is now home to the largest Museum of Pre-History in Europe.
