Aussies on the Riviera

Aussies on the Riviera

Nick LaletinI'm Nick Laletin, Founder/President/Mate of Aussies on the Riviera.

Firstly, let me tell you a little about the club:

Basically, for years I have watched English, American and French celebrate their National days, in fact most Europeans here, but sadly no Australians, as there was no club or contact point for them.

Because of this, (although my wife is French and I’ve thrown myself into the lifestyle down here), I felt that I, and other Australians - including Kiwis and Springboks - were missing contact with each other, and our celebrations - not to mention barbies, B & S Balls, and decent games of cricket.

Australia The club is a social one, with the idea to group Australians, and friends of Australia, together for certain events. It is also a source of information/help to those who need it.

SINGLES NIGHTS

EVENTS ON THE WAY

The general plan is that if we all meet up occasionally, chew the fat, find out from all what we want the club to be, and then take it from there. I don't want it to be some out-of-touch committee of old fogies, (even though I'm only 37...), but something fun and lighthearted.

Depending on when you see this, and once I have you on the database, you will get regular updates and such to things like…

JUNE Sat 12th: Queen’s Birthday BBQ (my house)

(sheesh, the titles I come up with for these official functions – oh, and although WA doesn’t celebrate around this time, youse are all still welcome – non royalists too, and I wont be putting up with any female mud-wrestling type antics over what the new flag should look like, like last time…erm…well, mebbe just a little, but only if you substitute the mud for aeroplane jelly, okay?)

This will be a calm family affair at my house, on the balcony leading to the gardens and kiddy pool, where we can try out my new Barbie, stubby holders and esky. It will be a BYO AFFAIR (that means Bring Yer Own for the unedjukated), with guests from as far as Australia (my mudder), room for kiddies to run around, and if someone brings a bat, we can play tip cricket in the back lane. The missus will russle up some salad and sarnies, and it will go from around Midday to late in the evening. Please RSVP so I know how many paper plates and plastic forks I gotta buy.

JULY Sun 25th: Midsummer's BBQ (my house)

Due to the resounding success/numerous demands /miserable turn out/filthy weather/complete memory loss*(one to be circled on June 13th)* of the previous party, once again Nick and his missus are proud to host you and your rugrats chez Moi for another
BYO-SEE-HOW-MANY-WE-CAN-GET-IN-THE-KIDDIES-POOL-THIS-TIME type BBQ, unless of course the fishing are biting – best you rsvp again…

SEPT Sat 25th: End of Summer Pub Crawl (old Nice)

This doesn’t need too much explaining, I hope – if I can scam it again this year, it’s 6 beers in 5 pubs in Old Nice for only 10 €… last one it was the Kiwi girls who won…and for those who remember, there were 3 chooks won.

NOV Tue 2nd: Melbourne Cup Lunch/Sweep (venue to be announced)

A nice and civilised luncheon, where those who can’t break the habit stop work from noon, and with all good intentions, get plastered and yell out the name of a horse they just learned about because they pulled its name outta a hat…

DEC Fri 31st: Desperate and Dateless B&S New Years Eve Ball

Now, fingers crossed, this will be the touchstone of the Aussie club, with hundreds of famous models and Italian gigolos battling for a place in THE bash of the year – all you can eat oysters, champagne fountain, great music, blah blah….you don’t have to be single, (but may end up), there will be a kiddies table – even free balloons!!!!

MEMBERSHIP

The idea is not to make money, and all membership fees go to the running or registration of the club, and what ever is left over goes to the next party!

We ask all those who would like to join to pay 10 €uros for membership, or 15 €uros for a couple… HOWEVER, membership is NOT obligatory, and I’m happy just to keep people in touch with one another.

Our events have included so far (but are not limited to):

Australia Day: January 27 2003
First meeting of Australian club in 2003 was a kinda wine tasting/party, buffet. Excellent turnout for our first event - 33 officially joined the club, and another 30 just came for the fun.
2004 saw us at a villa with food and live music, prizes etc for 80 people.

Anzac Day: April 25 2003
Party/Pub crawl at 6 different bars in Old Nice (Wayne’s, Thor, McMahon’s, Scarlett O'Hara, O’Neill’s, Masterhome or De Klomp.), 2-up, chook raffle. (Don’t wanna talk about this one, but I just know I shouldn’t have driven home… 2004 was annulled because of virus problems.

Queens Birthday: June 9 2003
Barbeque/Beach Volleyball Fund raiser and party on either the Promenade des Anglais, using the lower part of the beach for volleyball and abusing the bar, whilst on the Promenade itself having a Barbie for countless tourists and members.
2004: (This may be in collaboration with The South African Club) it will be a BBQ at my house…

Melbourne Cup Day: November 4 2003
Lunch/Party Midday in Villefranche at Mike’s Chez Net – of course, my horse came last… and had to buy the drinks…

Boxing Day: December 6 2003
Recovery Party/Cricket at St. Jean Cap Ferrat

We’ve had a few gatherings, but honestly, not as many I’d like… some have been huge gatherings, numbering around 80, others small and intimate, around 6… an example, our first Australia day 2003 was planned to be a very light affair - a few drinks and finger food at E-mail Cafe, 8 pm Monday 27 January, 8 rue St. Vincent. It in fact turned out to be a swell party, with the club using all the membership funds for a terrific buffet.

Australia Day 2004, in collaboration with another terrific club down here called The Commonwealth Club (far more professional, organised and stuff) was around 80, and you can see the results by clicking HERE

Anzac Day was a medium turn out, 3 chooks were won on the night, as well as countless free drinks, chocolate bars, and not many were left standing at the end of the night…

Loadsa publicity

The Riviera Reporter, The Riviera Times, Nice Matin and Connexion have all run articles about us, and we are occasionally on the Riviera Radio, (but more and more word of mouth and the success of our little get togethers is proving a winning form of advertisement).

If you have any questions - or more importantly feedback or suggestions, please don't hesitate to call me. Hope to meet you soon,

Nick Laletin
Founder/President/Mate
