I read in one of the english language online newspapers that a new law requires that we all carry our passports because if you are asked to show it to the police and do not have it with you, there are hefty fines!
Does it have to be a passport? As far as I understand it has been law for some time that we need to always carry photographic ID?
As far as I understand it, the only ‘official’ form of identification the British have is their passport, and therefore technically, this is what should be carried. However, I don’t, and I don’t think many others do either, I have my Spanish photo driving licence, and so far that has been enough.
I believe some people carry photocopies of their passports, which, as a back up, isn’t a bad idea?
I think that before they could only demand to see you passport but couldn't find you but now they can... maybe worth checking with the policia local and asking what they would accept as suitable?
what about kids? surely they dont have to carry ID?
I carrry a laminated colour photo copy of my passport.
