Days Out: Athens North

Penteli mountain
At 1,109m and situated at around 25kms north of Athens. The monastery, museum and Davelis cave are the main things to visit. Famous for its marble, which was used to build the Parthenon.
Lake Marathon, the archaeological museum and the tomb monument of the Athenian soldiers killed in the battle in 490 BC. Also several beaches.

Located in Decelea. Summer palace of the former Greek Royal Family. It belongs to the Greek government and needs renovation. Nice area for walks.

Highest mountain in Attica at 1400m. Perfect for hiking or climbing. Footpaths, caves and wildlife. Casino nearby. Parnitha exit of the National Road towards Lamia.
