The orthodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of improper bites and un-aligned teeth. Children as young as 7 should be routinely examined for any deviations from normal growth and development. Sometimes even younger children are treated for important developmental abnormalities. Both adults and children can be treated throughout life, and many custome-made appliances now offer very discrete and efficient solutions to“wearing braces”. The orthodontis often works in close collaboration with the general dentist, maxilo-facial surgeon and esthetic dental specialist. Younger children, showing unfavourable function and thumb-sucking / other habits, may be referred to the speech therapist for additional support.
