Learning Greek can be a daunting project, especially when we have no prior experience with learning a foreign language, or do not need it for our daily activities.  However, as Nelson Mandela said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head; if you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart”.

Indeed, while not necessary to speak the language fluently whilst on the island, small phrases in shops, tavernas, bars, etc., are highly appreciated and go a long way.  Thus, in this blog, I will be providing simple snippets of Greek that can be useful to the expats for everyday communication.  Phrases for everyday communication, simple sayings that can be useful for understanding the cultural ambiance of the island, useful easy grammar points as well as tips for avoiding common mistakes, songs, and simple dialogues are some of the topics that will be covered in this blog.  In addition, I will be clarifying the meaning of some vernacular expressions that are not part of standard Greek.
