Weekend Getaway: A Guide to the Perfect Stay in Aarhus

Ever since Travel + Leisure named Aarhus one of the Best Places to Travel in 2016, the city has become a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. With its beautiful canal, Michelin-awarded restaurants, and Olafur Elisasson’s rainbow towering over ARoS, it’s no wonder Aarhus is becoming a must-see city.

Does the thought of a weekend in the charming capitol of Jutland seem tempting to you? Then by all means, keep reading this blog post! Here, I’ll be guiding you to a lovely weekend getaway – complete with insider tips on where to stay, what to see, where to go shopping, and what to eat.

Elegant Surroundings in the Heart of Aarhus

If you are looking for the classic Aarhus experience, Hotel Ritz is the obvious choice. The hotel is located at Banegårdspladsen. This means that you stay in the very center of Aarhus. The train station, the main shopping street, and Aarhus City Hall will be your nearby neighbors. In 2014, the hotel was renovated.

The renovation included a preservation of the original building from 1932, leaving the hotel modern and historic. Today, The Ritz offers you a variety of rooms as well as amenities such as free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour reception desk.

An Exciting Mix of Danish and International Art

To add a cultural activity to your itinerary, I recommend paying a visit to ARoS. It’s the city’s largest museum of modern art. The museum is not only famed for interesting exhibitions, but also for its architecture – especially the installation on the rooftop: “Your Rainbow Panorama” by Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. Inside the museum, you’ll find acknowledged artists like P.S. Krøyer, J.F. Willumsen, Per Kirkeby, and Tony Oursler. Check out to find information on current exhibitions, opening hours, and ticket prices.

Shopping in the Latin Quarters

In the city’s Latin Quarters, you’ll meet charming and creative streets with unique shops. One of them is Stylepaste – a lifestyle boutique with fashion as well as interior design. They stock luxurious brands like Acne Studios and Gubi. However, the shops in this quarter are not limited to fashion. Visit Ganefryd and buy organic food and pay Bang & Thy a visit and get inspired by their stunning floral art. If your shopping spree exhausts you, you can take a break in one of the quarter’s cafes such as La Cabra.

Michelin Stars en masse

Lately, Michelin stars have been raining down on Aarhus-based restaurants. Four restaurants have been rewarded with stars in The Michelin’s Nordic Guide 2017: Frederikshøj, Gastromé, Domestic, and Substans. All restaurants excel at cooking innovative, Nordic food with both classic and experimental features. Remember to book your table in advance, as the restaurants have long waiting lists. Have a look at Michelin’s top picks and other recommended restaurants from Aarhus here.
