Menton’s Quirky Central Park Coffee

I have a confession to make.  I’ve never seen the TV programme, Friends until today when, strictly for the purpose of writing this post, I watched the episode where Lisa Kudrow’s character tried to teach one of the men to speak French.  Please don’t judge me.

I’m not immune to pop culture references, past or present, so when Hubby and I wandered into the Central Park Coffee in downtown Menton the other day, I got the Friends theme right off the bat.  Dominating the room was a big comfy red sofa that created a cosy place to sit and chat with friends, much like on the TV show.  I also loved that out front they’d placed bright red blankets on their outdoor chairs so smokers who sat outside could wrap themselves in the blankets and stay cosy while they puffed on their ciggies.  I’m not sure if that was from Friends or not but I think it’s brilliant.

Inside, here and there, the owner sprinkled Friends mementoes like DVD’s, photos of the cast and New York souvenirs like the iconic Yellow taxi cab.

The focus of their menu is home-made bagels so we ordered one, toasted with cream cheese, of course.  It was fresh, delicious, and light as a feather, something closer to a brioche than the robust New York or Montreal style bagels that we’re used to.

If bagels aren’t your thing, they also serve cupcakes, pies, doughnuts, bagel sandwiches and a few salads and lunch options, however, I can only vouch for the bagels and Kusmi Tea, both of which were worth a return trip.

Quirky?  Yes.  But the owner’s friendly little dog, the delicious, feather-light bagels and the attentive service made it a pleasant place to have tea, coffee and a snack.

If you do go, there’s a lovely women’s consignment and vintage clothing shop next door called, “Dépôt Vente au Quay 56” that’s worth a look, coincidentally, something I enjoy whenever I visit New York.
