There’s no shortage of art on the Côte d’Azur but how to find the more interesting galleries that show an eclectic variety of work? Of course, taste is of some importance here, but if you simply like to pop in and see some thought-provoking or original art, here are a galleries few not to be missed.
The brand new Galerie Inattendue Paul Conti is on the Pénétrante at the entry to La Colle-sur-Loup, north of the Polygone shopping centre. In an impressive 450 square metres, Conti exhibits a variety of interesting artists in all mediums in a lively and friendly atmosphere. There’s also a photo studio upstairs so you might be persuaded to have your portrait taken, as well as a projection room to be opened shortly and a shop with affordable items (think original Christmas gifts). A definite must!
The Opiom Gallery in… Opio, of course. Opened a few years ago by real estate magnate Michael Zingraf, this smart gallery offers regular exhibitions of high quality photography in all genres as well as some sculpture. Generally very large prints are on display, with impressive work by photographers in private collections of the rich and famous such as Elton John.
Galerie Eva Vautier is run by the daughter of iconic local artist Ben and is off avenue Malausséna, just north of Nice Ville railway station. Shows often include works by her famous father as well as a variety of contemporary and often left-field and thought-provoking artists.
The Galerie Depardieu, in the heart of Nice, exhibits a wide variety of contemporary art including paintings, sculpture, photography, video and installations, as well as regular conferences, jazz concerts and performances.
