Altona celebrates from 1. to 17. July 2016
For 18 years now, Hamburg’s biggest cultural and district festival, the altonale, has been taking place every year shortly before the summer holidays. The most diverse places become the scenery of literature, film, arts, theatre and music performances over a period of more than two weeks.
Partner this year: the Istanbul district of Maltepe
The cultural programme is further enriched by artists and activities from a partner town which changes every year – the Istanbul district of Maltepe is this year’s partner, offering an exciting and colourful program.

A new item on the agenda is the altonale salon, an open discussion forum at the Thalia Theatre in Gaußstraße and will address the topic of “Flight and Hope”. At the same time, the front yard of Thalia is turned into a market of opportunities where institutions, initiatives and associations working in the field of refugee aid will be presenting their offers and options.
Let’s have fun! Street festival from 15. to 17. July
This year again, the festival will come to a splendid culmination with the big altonale street festival where, from July 15 to July 17, artists, businesses and associations from the Altona district will present themselves in their very own way – culinary altonale, an arts and design market, the information mile, the altonale street games, altonale for kids and lots of other things are waiting to be discovered. Cabaret and other performances on 12 stages make for a fascinating programme suited for all ages – and the access is free of charge.
