Hamburg Cruise Days on the Horizon

From the 11th to the 13th of September, the cruise feeling is brought to shore with the return of the Hamburg Cruise Days. Hundreds of thousands of cruise enthusiasts come to the Hamburg Harbour for this spectacular event, which is bigger than ever this year.

Leading up to the event, starting on the 4th of September and continuing for the duration of Hamburg Cruise Days, witness the entire backdrop of the Harbour illuminated in mesmerising blue lights- named, very appropriately, Blue Port Hamburg. Creator of the Blue Port Hamburg is the international lighting artist Michael Batz. His award-winning lighting projects and concepts have been seen in Salzburg, Florence, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Berlin.

The Hamburg Cruise Days Event stretches along 4km of the Elbe shore line, from the Cruise Centre in HafenCity to the Cruise Center in Altona. Occupying this space will be 15 sponsored themed islands that offer a range of experiences and entertainment, bringing the magnificent world of cruising to dry land.

Part of the more exclusive experience is “Dinner in the Sky”,  a restaurant suspended 50 meters high in the sky with breathtaking views of the harbour. There are also events that everyone can enjoy, including stages with daily programs of live music and shows, showcases, a mobile ice rink and a two-storey climbing facility (see the activity deck), shopping & flea markets, cruise expo and fairs, 3D virtual cruise ship tours and even ZUMBA fitness classes.

The daily highlights include:

Friday 11th: Costa Cruises Fireworks- an exhilarating end to the first day of the event. The huge firework display (approx. 22:15) will captivate and charm viewers as the explosive light arrays glimmer against the Blue Port Hamburg.

Saturday 12th: The Great Hamburg Cruise Days Parade- a majestic display of Cruise Liners sail by the illuminated port, quite a remarkable and world-exclusive sight. Each ship is welcomed with a firework display and an accompanying entourage of boats and rafts. The parade will be broadcasted by NDR, starting at 21:30.

Sunday 13th: The Large Ship Spectacle- the MSC Splendida and the Queen Mary 2, the two heavyweights of the Hamburg Cruise Days, will sail down stream for all to witness and marvel. The great spectacle will take place in both the morning and evening of Sunday, from which the evening show will conclude the Hamburg Cruise Days event.
