Tips for getting a job straight out of university

Graduates are under more pressure than ever to secure a job after university. Increasing competition and increasing debt in some countries means a job straight out of university is harder to obtain but more important to secure. Here are three quick tips to get a foot on the jobs ladder.

Tips for getting a job straight out of university

With increasing numbers of students applying for university places and coming through to the job market, according to OECD statistics, graduates need to apply some smart strategies to get their first job.

1. One strategy that can help is an internship in the field of work that you are interested in. You may not earn very much and the work might not be at the level that you are capable of, but it will give you the “previous experience” that so many employers are asking for in job specs.

2. Study or work overseas and learn another language. One huge advantage of being an expat child and then student is that you’re more than likely to be bilingual, or at the very least proficient in more than one language. You’ll also have lived overseas and probably feel comfortable living surrounded by other cultures. All of this will help to make your first CV stand out, could help secure an interview and will provide a point of interest with hiring managers, so be sure to make the most of your expat childhood experience.

3. Make contacts. Wherever you are, whatever you do, reach out to make contacts. Start building your “Rolodex” of names as early as you can. An internship is a good example of a situation that can get a network of contacts going. Even if you don’t work for the company that took you on as an intern, you will have started that all-important web of contacts who you may need to turn to in the future.
