Sea Day (every third Monday of July)

Also known as Marine Day or Ocean Day. A national holiday every third Monday of July that aims to give thanks to the blessings that the ocean brings and its importance to Japan as an island nation. Since this is at the peak of summer, many families take advantage by taking a beach trip or doing other ocean-related activities.

It was only designated as a national holiday in 1995 which was originally known as Marine Memorial Day until they changed it in 1996. The Marine Memorial Day was instituted in 1941 to commemorate the 1876 voyage of the Meiji Emperor in the Meiji-Maru, an iron steamship from Scotland. The voyage included a trip to the Tohoku region and returned to Yokohama on July 20 of the same year.
