1) Tell us about your products and services.
My company offers Tailor made tours & events in different languages in Amsterdam & The Netherlands. History, culture, art, architecture , nature, heritage and more can be combined in the tours depending on the interests of the customer and their budget. Accommodation and transportation can be arranged too.
2) How long have you been in the business and why did you choose this sector.
More than 20 years ago I started to work for museums and travel agencies. In 1999 I started for myself with Elisabeth’s Tailor made tours. I chose this sector because it covers a lot of my own interests such as different languages, cultural, historical and artistic aspects and customers of all over the world with different backgrounds and traditions/values. Due to this work, my own world view becomes wider too.
3)What is the thing you like most about your work?
The things I like a lot, is that every day is a different day, and can be a surprise because of the diversity of activities and people. I also have to keep up with new developments in my business and to stay up to date with cultural life in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. It keeps you alive and wide awake !
4) Which nationalities are your clients?
Nationalities from all over the world; a lot of English, French, Spanish and Italian speaking guests. Also many others. In fact, they come from all continents.
5) What do you think these internationals love best about living in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is known as a tolerant and international orientated city that attracts a lot of international people from all over the world. Also, its human size and beauty of the city with the canals, architecture, museums, nightlife, culture and parks. The creativity in the city which is stimulated a lot and visible in many areas. For example: Old monuments mixed with modern architecture with sustainable solutions. Tax-friendly for foreign investments. Many exchanges and possibilities for foreign students at the universities of Amsterdam and other cities. All these reasons makes it a wonderful place to live in and attracts newcomers and visitors from all over the world.
6)What do you like to do in your spare time away from work?
Travelling, walking and cycling in nature, relaxing on a nice terrace with a paper and a coffee, tennis, going out to concerts, meeting friends.
7) What is your fondest memory or proudest moment at work?
My proudest moments are when my guests are satisfied and had a great time and I was there to contribute to a new experience.
8) What do you think the expats and international think of the Dutch people?
They appreciate that the Dutch know how to deal with problems/obstacles concerning water management !
Knowledge of different languages and not being too chauvinistic. The negative comments I hear too, of course: The Dutch can be blunt and too direct and live to much according their own agendas.
9) Which product or service is your bestseller and why?
Tailor made cultural tours : guided visits in one of the many museums and walks, bike or boat tours to explore Amsterdam or another interesting town, fishing village or province.
10) What good Dutch words or expressions should non Dutch people learn?
Goede morgen, Lekker, Eet smakelijk.
