Here are the ten biggest films for 2017 at the Dutch box office; with just five weeks to go, only one new movie is likely to make the list…Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
As the end of the year nears, we can forecast which movies will end as the top ten films of 2017 in the Netherlands. It’s not to say we don’t expect any changes from the current YTD rankings. In fact, we expect to see the number 10 movie change 3 times between now and the 31st December. The spot is currently held by Spider-Man: Homecoming, but expect it to be supplanted by Thor: Ragnarok in the next week. But alas, it is likely to be a short-lived visit to the top 10 for the man wielding the mighty hammer. On 16th December, the juggernaut Star Wars: The Last Jedi gets released, giving it 15 days to catch Thor which should happen based on comp box-office receipts for Star Wars: The Force Awakens which was released on the same date in 2015. It earned €5.0 million over that same end-of-year frame. Even if SWTLJ takes in slightly less, it will be enough to bump Thor out of the Top 10.
[UPDATE 06 JAN 2018: Well we weren’t too far off in our projections. 9 of the 10 films we projected to end the year at the top of the Dutch box office for 2017 were in fact correct. The order, however, was a little off, mainly due to the strong showing of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. We expected it to end the year at number 10 with approximately €5 million in ticket sales. As it turned out, the film made nearly double that, landing it at number 3 for the year.
Five weeks ago we had also projected Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 would retain its number 9 position for year-end. That proved to be incorrect as Thor: Ragnarok ended up passing Guardians to claim the 10th and last slot.
Below are the actually 2017 box office rankings in red (in black are our original projections)…]
- #1 Despicable Me 3 √
- #2 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales √
Beauty & the BeastStar Wars: The Last Jedi

DunkirkThe Fate of the Furious

Fifty Shades DarkerThe Boss Baby

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2It
Star Wars: The Last JediThor: Ragnarok
How do these compare to the 2017 YTD American box office rankings? Similar, for sure, with only three significant differences: Wonder Woman, the #2 movie in the U.S., ranks #16 YTD in the Netherlands (which is actually behind…gulp… Smurfs: The Lost Village, if you can believe it! That film doesn’t even make the 2017 top 50 in the U.S.), POTC:Dead Men Tell No Tales which fared much better here in Holland at #2 YTD than it did in the States (#14) and Fifty Shades Darker (#7 in the Netherlands vs. #21 in the U.S.).
