Costa da Caparica – A Day At The Beach

The beach season has definately arrived and we are taking it very seriously this summer! Now that my son is 2, we can all really enjoy the beach together. Like most 2 year olds, he´s is totally digging the sand (haha did you see how I did that?) and he still loves running from the waves and tumbling around in the water like a drunk sailor.

Costa da Caparica (on the other side of the 25 de Abril bridge) is the place where most of the locals go during the hot spring and summer months.  The beaches here are AMAZING and there are so many to choose from AND they are all a little bit different from one another. Some have really nice, fancy restaurants, some have little stands outside where they sell beach things, some have just a simple little cafe and some sell bolas de Berlim right there on the beach (fried sugar donuts with or without egg cream) but they´re all really great!

Make sure when you go there on the weekends or holidays, that you beat the late afternoon traffic coming back into Lisbon. The traffic from the beachgoers is horrendous from about 4:00-7:30pm (16:00-19:30) and even on week days from about 5:00pm (17:00) it can get pretty backed up (it´s nothing compared to weekends and holidays though) so going in the morning or early afternoon and leaving before 3:00/3:30 (15:00/15:30) is really the best idea, in my opinion. We usually have to go early in the morning because the afternoon sun is too hot and dangerous for our little guy anyways.

Make sure you ALWAYS where your SPF here in Portugal, the sun and UV rays are very strong. For Luca we make sure we have an SPF of at least 45% (UVA + UVB) and at least 30% for us, also a UV protected shirt & hat for him and an umbrella for all 3 of us. We go all out with UV protection!

I´m so excited for another Portuguese summer aren´t you?? It´s funny though because by the end of August I´m so over the heat! Do you feel the same or are you an endless summer kinda person?
