Early Sunday Evening in Coimbra and on the water with a Jazz trio
Last weekend we were invited to join a group of friends in Coimbra, central Portugal for an evening boat ride (not quite a cruise) on the river Mondego and a concert by a jazz trio.
We arrived at 6.15 and were seated in the large and comfortable flat bottomed boat which operates in the center of Coimbra. This part of the river is dammed and wide but only about 4 feet in depth so there is no effect of the tidal flow.
The boat is steered in a lazy zig-zag so that it takes a long time to go a short distance all the time you can take advantage of the cooling river breeze (it was scorching in the city) and the famous views.
Towards half way through our hours entertainment we were given a cold glass of white wine which was very nice although it did make clapping the efforts of the young jazz singer and musicians a little difficult to accomplish.
The talented trio consisting of a lead guitarist, double bass player and a singer who sang in English, Portuguese and Brazilian. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening with most going off to dinner and then an outside classical music concert. http://www.visitcentrodeportugal.com.pt/events/coimbra-art-festival/
Is Coimbra becoming the musical center of Portugal?
