Electricity in Portugal
I used to swing between thinking that the EDP were the worst organized company on the planet or on the other hand maybe I was misunderstanding something or doing something wrong myself.
After all Portugal has had electricity for a long time and the corporate internal systems should have been smoothed out by now.
My opinion is coloured because I deal with the EDP a lot on both a professional level, helping construction clients to have new supplies installed or upgrading and moving existing supplies which is fraught will more problems than you could make up if you had a long rainy day to pass indoors. Today I am dealing with them on a personal level.
Today I am having 🙂 or not having 🙁 a reconnection of the supply to one of my properties so I have been sitting here for the last hour (since 8am) waiting for the EDP engineers to come and do their magic.
My allotted time is 8am until 10.30 am which when it was confirmed by a text message I must admit was far more organized and customer friendly than i was expecting. When I made my appointment with the woman in the call center I said would it be possible to add my mobile number to the appointment details as I think the house may be difficult for the engineers to find.
It is in the center of Penela but there is no street name plaque. In fact the address that the EDP has on record is the one that was in place when the communists renamed the streets of Penela with numbers. It has long since been renamed. (The effort of correcting this with the EDP was more than I could bear).
The woman making the appointments said it was a waste of time adding my number because “they” the engineers don’t read the installation notes.
I am not really sure how you can plan against that! The EDP appears to have a broken system ignored by its workers. The result of which is that i will probably serve my two and a half hour sentence in solitary confinement without anything resembling a connection to show for it.
If on the other hand if they do turn up i will be surprised and delighted.
9.10 am. What’s this a text message from the EDP !. The engineer is on the road and will be with me by 9.40am.
With half an hour to kill I was leaning towards having a coffee and a read of the paper. Penela is full of cafes. I decide to stay put just in case.
Fingers crossed I could be wrong with my poor opinion of their service after all. I am still not confident that they will find the house because what they do is to ask neighbors “do you know Donna Maria Celeste Rodrigues lopes …… “ Which I understand is the old way because people live in family groups here and rarely move house as a result everyone knows everyone else. I on the other hand have a foreign name that the engineers and my neighbors won’t be able to pronounce. I would be a lot easier with GPS co-ordinates.
What’s this !!! Oh damn it’s the EDP engineer at 9.15am. Good job I didn’t go for a coffee.
He greeted me by name and with a friendly handshake connected the supply cable to the house and five minutes later he was finished.
Which leaves me with one less thing to complain about….
