Thursday was a good day

Thursday was a good day – a very good day

A couple of months ago a friend asked me if I would like to go fly fishing with him and a friend who was over in Portugal visiting him.

I am sick and tired of this damp window, I am sick and tired of this damp apartment, This damp worries me it’s getting worse, This damp house worries me it’s getting worse, This damp wall worries me it’s getting worse
fly fishing on the Alva central Portugal

I am very busy with work so at first I said no.  I had not been fly fishing for 15 years so didn’t even know where my gear was.

A couple of weeks later I came across my fly fishing tackle and as I went through it to check the condition and just exactly what equipment I had it started to fire up my interest in fly fishing again.

I gave my friend a call and joined them.

At 7am we met Antonio the fishing guide in Miranda do Corvo and travelled to fish the Rio Alva  near Vila Nova Poiares some 30 Kilometres from Coimbra.

Late August on a warm day in a cool river – Perfect

I had not realized that we were using the services of a hired fishing guide.

The guide was a real stroke of luck. He was able to show us the river, the likely spots to find a trout and what flies were being productive at this time of the year.

We tackled up and waded out into the river. I didn’t bother with waders I just waded in a pair of shorts as the water was very clean and it was a hot summer’s day. Standing in the water lush green countryside all around and the occasional brilliant blue flash of a kingfisher it was easy to become immersed in the fly fishing.

Wild Brown trout

After an excellent lunch we headed back to the river and just as we were talking about packing up I caught a beautiful wild brown trout it fought very well and was released without being taken out of the water.

If you like fishing, beautiful surroundings then give our guide a call he speaks perfect English, German, Portuguese and French.    Call  Antonio   on 919 695 416
