What to expect in your first therapy appointment?

Martine Hill, Director and Counsellor at Alliance Counselling gives some indications on what to expect in your first therapy appointment:

“Many people ask us about the first appointment because they might be a bit anxious.

At Alliance, you’ll be greeted as you arrive by our receptionist if you arrive between 9am and 5pm. If you have an appointment after hours or on a Saturday, you’ll be greeted by your therapist. And sometimes a therapist might be busy with an other client so you might have to wait in the waiting room.

You’ll be given some documents to complete and the documents will include information on your contacts and there will be some information on our policies and procedures. All of that will be reviewed in a treatment session when you are with your therapist.

In the room, with your therapist, they’ll be asking you some questions about why you booked the appointment, what you’re hoping to get of the therapy, how have these issues or challenges been affecting your life, what are your expectations of therapy.

The therapists will ask you a lot of other questions. They might ask you about your family history, they might talk about different experiences that you’ve had.

They’re trying to gather as much information so that they can put the best treatment plan that will work for you.

And you have to remember that therapy is a process and that you might not gain great insights from the first session.

All our therapists are professional so they will be listening to you in a non-judgmental way and everything you say in therapy session is confidential, unless there are some safety issues.”
