What’s F45 all about?
If you pay any attention to fitness trends in Singapore you will have come across the term F45. Some time last year this fitness concept graced our shores and it’s managed to become quite a fixture with an increasing number of gyms opening. The craze started in Australia and it combines a high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout with a circuit format.
What Does F45 Mean?
F stands for functional and 45 are the number of minutes a session runs for. The workouts are designed to, “unify the muscle groups of the body and to make you look, move and perform better in all aspects of your life.”
Every day throughout the week a different kind of workout is offered. For example, Loyals runs on Fridays and is a high intensity, high speed and cardio workout. There are six classes at different times throughout the day. Other workouts, like Pegasus and Romans, focus on strength and resistance training.
The idea of functional training is that the exercises mimic everyday movement. In theory this can reduce the risk of injury. The exercises typically involve the use of the full body and multiple muscle groups to build functional muscle.
Another key feature of the classes is that no workout is ever the same. To help participants through the class, as well as physical instructors, there are also screens showing how to do each exercise as you make your way around the circuit. There are usually six stations, with three different exercises at each station, and intervals ranging from 20 to 45 seconds.
These workouts are routinely changed up every few weeks and months, which ensures you are constantly pushing yourself, and breaking the ceiling that is your level of fitness!
Who is it for?
F45 is targeted at people looking to increase the intensity of their workouts in a focused way. The option of many class times on each day makes F45 appealing to working people as well as those with more flexible time commitments.
How does it work?
When you join, you download an app, from which you schedule, choose and adjust all of your classes. The flexibility this offers is a big reason why more and more young professionals are taking it up.
The relatively small time commitment and flexibility, combined with friendly trainers who offer encouragement by the bucket load, make F45 the perfect solution for those stuck in an unhealthy rut. It is perhaps why this fitness regime is dragging so many people out of what we like to call ‘exercise purgatory’.
You don’t need to think too much, you simply turn up in your kit, follow the instructions, push yourself for 45 minutes, and go home feeling great (must be all those endorphins getting released).
Where Can I Find F45?
There are several franchises around Singapore. One thing to note is that some franchisees own multiple locations.
For instance, the Novena and Holland Village locations are owned by the same group, with a third planned in the Orchard area in the near future. There are nine locations in total, with another six slated to open this year.
