English speaking schools for my 16 year old son

Hi Does anyone know if any of the schools in Pontivy teach lessons in English? We are moving to France and my son has limited French at the moment (but happy and will be learning French).  However, it would be great if there is a school he could start that does lessons for English speaking children or teaches in English. I dont really know how else to put it.  I have contacted a few places in Pontivy but had no response, so feel a bit at a loss at what to do. Many thanks in advance for your help. Kelly

Try Greta. The problem is he's 16 so going into French education is going to be very hard. The best will be mission locale to get help. There is the aikb in goureac about half hour from Pontivy. They do english lessons. Plus one of the teachers there teaches (or did in June) at lycee Kerlebost Pontivy. At 16 they are half way through the bac. Does he know what he wants do education wise. As far as I k ow the nearest international school is Rennes. those I know who have come over at 16 with little or no French have all gone through mission locale for French classes and courses.

I really do sympathise as this will undoubtedly be a challenging time for your son until his French improves. However, imagine the reaction if an immigrant family to a smallish town in the UK was wondering if there was a local school that gave all lessons in Hindi, Urdu, Mandarin Chinese - or even French! Uproar, and lots of negative comments about immigrants needing to speak the language, integrating fully etc etc.

I would think international school, or staying in uk until gcse's are done at least. Don't want to be negative at all here but what sort of employment would he be thinking in the future.

At 16 education is hard in your native tongue, there are so many subjects to cover to expect someone to learn enough french quick enough to pass the bac would in my opinion be too big an ask.

If he goes to international school and takes french as an option he could do well.

I would also enrol him in a few french groups for example football, rugby, etc to make friends and get to grips with the french language, good luck whatever you decide

Presumably your son will be taking his GCSEs in the UK this term before moving to France. That will take a bit of pressure off but he will still have a lot to do with having  a new language to learn to succeed in a very important time for his education.

You have acces to 4 French lycées doing the International Bac. Whilst the teaching will be in French becasue fo the OIB there will be English or English speaking teachers around to help him.

Two are in Rennes  - http://www.saintvincent-rennes.org/rubriques/gauche/sections-internationales

One in Brest - http://www.education.gouv.fr/annuaire/29-finistere/brest/lycee/lycee-sainte-anne.html

One in La Baule (44) - http://www.education.gouv.fr/annuaire/44-loire-atlantique/la-baule-escoublac/lycee/lycee-grand-air.html

he would have to stay either in an internat (boarding) or with a family for the week (Mon to Friday) but if he has no option but to be immersed in the French language he can pick up the basics and be fluent with his peer group in about 6 weeks.

thanks for all your replies everyone.  I have emailed the mission locale in Pontivy a few weeks ago but not had a response so any suggestions on how to get a response from them would help.  He is doing his GCSE's at the moment so they would be done by the time we come to  France.  I think a French language course would be a good idea and help hus confidence.  Then we will go from there.  I know this is going to be hard for him but he really wants to  come to France after being picked on in England quite badly.    Kelly

Mission locale deal with 18 to 26 yr olds. At 16 it would be a different department, sorry don't know which.  My 18 yr old grandson came to France to live with us, no french except what he had picked up on holidays with us. He has been here nearly 3 yrs.  Is fluent, has learnt for 2 school yrs at Greta, in carhaix, and is just about to finish a year doing a floristry course living in at lycée. It can be done, put him into main stream school, they will try all they can, and get him extra french lessons, or take him to a conversation class in the evening. At his age he will be living it all day, will pick it up from the other teenages at school, you never know a lot of schools find them an English buddy to boost their confidence. He will learn it quicker than you are giving him credit for.

Sorry grannydot misson locale is for 16+. There are many French children who have dropped out or even passed their bac at 16 and no idea what they want to do. They sign up with mission locale. We know several that have. So long as your son is willing they will help him kellyorchard

kellyorchard 1430741649

thank you live and love and granny dot I really appreciate your help and advice :o)

I maybe stand corrected, but we thought that, and sent some friend there with their 16 yr old, who just will not go to school, and they were told no we only deal with 18+ yr olds. That was in Rostrenen. Maybe different towns work differently.

Live&Love 1430747468

That is so weird grannydot as I know a 16 year old who dropped out of his cap cuisine and he signed on with mission locale Rostrenen in September last year.  Did a pop course there and is now signed up to do cap hoteilier starting this coming September in St Brieuc. I also know a lad who lives other side of Carhaix who was 16 when he signed up with ML.  I wonder if it's the person who does the initial interview that is the problem

so teenagers .... and adults? ..... with very little  French (but willing to learn) can get into courses and get jobs?  I was thinking about doing a self employed business doing gardening, shopping; cleaning and home help for those that find it difficult to do those things.  I have lots of experience in this area. Your opinions are welcome.

The courses is for anyone of working age. The idea is to give them the basic french to be able to work here. We registered initial with the pole d'emplo they got Toby onto the French course initially, and told us to go to mission locale. They did the rest, got him extra days, and found a lycee where he would get paid for going as we only have pension.  There was rumour that in future you would have to pay for the courses, whether that was ever auctioned I don't know, but when Toby did the full time course, last year he got paid for doing it.

The idea of the courses at Greta is to leapfrog you into work.
