According to legend, the Meyboom planting is based on a dispute concerning taxes on beer between Brussels and Leuven.
The small battle that followed was won by Brussels who received the privilege of planting a Meyboom tree every August 9th. It must be planted before 17:00 otherwise the privilege passes Leuven.
Every year since 1308 the Brussels contingent have planted "their tree" despite attempts to seize by Leuven.
