Press release on behalf of the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) Are you interested in trying sailing for the first time, or finding somewhere you can continue to enjoy the sport now you live in Spain?  Well now’s your chance!  The only multi-national sailing club on the Costa Calida, SAMM, invites you to their Open Day on Thursday 9th April 10am till 4pm at CTD, Los Narejos, Los Alcàzares on the Mar Menor. SAMM, or the Sailing Association Mar Menor to give it its full title, was formed in January 2006, and provides a host of opportunities to enjoy a range of sailing activities on the sunny waters of the Mar Menor and Mediterranean.  After eight years, we have over 120 members and most belong to one of the ‘Boat-Share Groups’ within SAMM that encompass a wide variety of boating interests. In a Boat-Share Group, the members all contribute equally to the costs of owning and using the boats (mooring fees, insurance and maintenance), which results in very economical sailing for everybody. The varied selection of Group boats include four dinghies, three 6 metre and two 6.5 metre day sailers, a 7 metre catamaran and a 7 metre Spanish motor boat.  If you are into bigger boats the owners of three large cruisers, 9 TO 11 METRES, offer sailing opportunities, whilst, at the other extreme, another Group build, sail and race radio controlled model yachts.  All Groups have access to the SAMM support boat, a Valliant DR450 Rib fitted with a 40HP outboard. The ‘Open day’ is being held at CTD or ‘Centro Technico Deportivo’ the Spanish sports academy situated right on the beach at Los Narejos which is the centre of our activities.  Except for the large cruisers our boats are based there, the dinghies in the secure boat park and the bigger boats either moored on the jetty or on swinging moorings nearby.  SAMM members with their own towed boats can use the CTD ramp to launch for a modest daily fee. CTD is a fabulous venue and the finest on the Mar Menor.  Open every day of the year its cafe sells hot and cold drinks, including beer, and a selection of tapas, all at bargain prices.  There are indoor and outdoor seating areas, toilets and shower facilities. Part of the University of Murcia, CTD offers accommodation, provides courses in all sport related subjects taking students up to a sports teaching qualification plus tuition in a wide range of sports for children and adults including pool, football, swimming, taekwondo, boxing, judo, Olympic fighting, canoeing and sailing.  It boasts an indoor 50 metre pool, gymnasium, multi-sports hall, other halls dedicated to individual sports plus classrooms for lectures and meetings. Outside there are padel tennis courts, a football field and the boat park. CTD has been used by many international teams as their training base, including the UK Olympic Sailing Squad, numerous Volleyball teams and many in other sports. In addition to pleasure sailing, SAMM also has an active racing program and a lively ‘Social Scene’ that includes a ten-pin bowling competition, cycling excursions and walks, trips to places of interest, various dinner dances plus a three day Spring Bash.  Musically gifted members have even formed two bands ‘The Reef Band’ and ‘Rusty Tracks’ that play regularly in the local area. All SAMM Groups encourage interested people to come and try their boats before joining them and this ‘Open Day’ is the perfect opportunity to do this.  So please come along, examine all our boats, talk to our members and, weather permitting, get out on the water for a trial sail.
