A cosmopolitan city, Buenos Aires plays host to a full calendar of festivals and events throughout the year. Here are some of the major happenings, by theme, in the city.

Art, Music and Dance

La Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires

The annual Buenos Aires Book Fair is a three-week event filled with readings, book signings and discussions. The fair is aimed mainly at readers, although publishers, authors and editors attend as well. More than one million people attend this annual event that takes place in April or May.

Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (BAFICI)

The Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival is a festival of independent films (with an emphasis on Latin American productions), that commonly draws over a quarter of a million attendees. Normally taking place in April in Buenos Aires, the festival includes screenings of hundreds of films, workshops and discussions.

Quilmes Rock

One of the largest music festivals in Argentina, Quilmes Rock is an April festival featuring major international acts as well as well-known Argentinian bands. Performances take place in a number of venues throughout Buenos Aires.

Código País Festival de Musica y Diseño

The unconventional Código País Festival of Music and Design brings together artists, DJs, musicians, designers, filmmakers and other creatives for three days every April.

Festival Ciudad Emergente

The Emerging City Festival, organised by Ministerio de Cultura del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, is aimed at youth. Attendees can experience music, street art, dance, poetry, fashion, film and digital art during the multi-day festival that takes place in June.

Tango Buenos Aires Festival y Mundial

Possibly what Argentina is most well-known for, Tango has been included on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The two-week Buenos Aires Tango Festival takes place every August and welcomes Tango dancers from around the world for performances, workshops, discussions and other dance-related activities.

Matbaires Festival de Matematica

The Matbaires Festival examines the role of mathematics and its application in the arts. Events includes games, exhibitions, poetry, dance, film, lectures and discussions which are open to the public. The festival takes place annually in November.


Copa Claro

The Copa Claro – Buenos Aires’ annual major tennis tournament – is an opportunity for Argentinians to watch the best Argentinian as well as other players. This event, part of a four-stop Latin American tour, is played in February on clay courts at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

Maratón Internacional de Buenos Aires

The Buenos Aires International Marathon is a 42 Km road race held annually in October on Buenos Aires city’s main streets and avenues. The event takes the contestants through the classic woods and wonderful parks of the district of Palermo. A fun run and children’s race is also held.

Abierto Argentino de Polo

Argentina’s Polo Open tournament is one of the longest-running competitions in the polo world. Held at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo, the world’s top players and horses show their skills on weekends in November and December.


La Rural

The Exposición Rural (‘La Rural’) – the traditional livestock, agriculture and industry exhibition – is one of the most important expos in Buenos Aires. Millions of visitors attend the annual July event, which includes activities such as cattle exhibitions and auctions, traditional-costume contests, skilled horseback riding contests and show jumping exhibitions.


Buenos Aires Carnivals

During the carnival period, parades and festivals take place in different suburbs of Buenos Aires city, where the typical “murgas” (a group of dancers and musicians) dressed in their elaborate costumes perform along the avenues and on stages. In February and/or March.

Festival Internacional de Circo

Circus companies from North and South America descend on Buenos Aires in April to perform in this International Festival of Circus.
