Melbourne has an abundance of good fishing spots to choose from, including the Port Phillip Bay, the Yarra River and the Maribyrnong River. Snapper, flathead and whiting are the main species that can be caught around Port Phillip, particularly snapper, which comes into the bay in September and stays until around March.

Rules and Regulations

A Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL) is a requirement for both fresh and sea fishing in Victoria. There are limits to the size and number of fish that can be caught. Penalties apply to those caught fishing without a licence. Licences can be purchased online, from tackle shops and from offices of the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

Fishing Spots

Popular fishing spots in the Melbourne region include the Maribyrnong River and the Yarra River which have jetties and fishing platforms on either side of the river. The piers at Port Melbourne, Middle Park, St Kilda, Brighton or Sandringham are also popular. Organised fishing charters operate in the Port Phillip Bay.
