Lost or Stolen Bank Cards, Credit Cards, Cheques and Mobile Telephones

What to do and who to call if your bank cards or telephones are lost or stolen in Australia...

Lost or Stolen Credit Cards

If a bank or credit card is lost or stolen it should be reported to the issuing bank or financial institution as soon as possible. This minimises the risk of the card being used fraudulently and ensures that a replacement card is arranged as soon as possible. Knowing the details of the last transaction on the card also helps the issuing financial authority track any unauthorised use of the card. In most cases the account holder is not held responsible for any transaction on the account after the card went missing, providing they notified their financial institution promptly.

Below is a list of contact information for lost or stolen cards for the major banks and card providers in Australia:

Lost or Stolen Cheque Books

In the event of a cheque book being lost or stolen the issuing bank or financial authority should be contacted either by telephone or by visiting a local branch. This should be done as soon as possible so that any cheques written since the book went missing can be cancelled.

Lost or Stolen Mobile Telephone

All mobile telephones have an International Mobile Equipment Identity, or IMEI number which can be used to block a phone if it is lost or stolen. Individuals should make a note of the IMEI number of their phone and store it separately from the phone.

  • To find out the IMEI number of a mobile telephone, dial *#06# on the handset

If a mobile telephone is lost or stolen the provider of the telephone should be contacted immediately and given the IMEI number. The provider can then block the use of the telephone and may trace it. Blocking a telephone means that another SIM card cannot be used in the phone on an Australian network. Should an individual wish to report the theft of a telephone to the police they too should also be given its IMEI.
