Visa Applications

Information about how to apply for a visa for entry into Australia, and what is required...

Applications for the appropriate visa can be made online. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has a system called ImmiAccount where online services can be accessed via a personal log in account. Services include the application and payment of some visas and citizenship by descent requests.

  • Once an application has been lodged, applicants can check the progress of an online application by logging into an ImmiAccount.
  • The DIBP have created a tutorial video to assist users in how to create an ImmiAccount.

Documents Required

The documents required vary depending on the type of visa applied for, and these are outlined clearly on the visa application forms. However, the following documents and information are generally required:

  • Certified copies of birth certificates of all applicants and dependents
  • Certified copies of marriage certificates (if applicable)
  • Skills assessment certificate
  • Work experience and references on letter headed paper
  • Certified copies of passports and driving licences as proof of identity
  • Proof of assets

Certified copieshave authorised/stamped by a qualified person and are legally recognised as being true copies of the original. Documents in other languages must be translated into English.

Payment for the visa must also be provided at the time of submission in Australian dollars.

Health Checks

Certain health requirements must be met when moving to Australia. In most cases, applicants of permanent, temporary and provisional visas must undergo a health check before the visa can be granted. The cost of the health check is borne by the applicant.

The results of the health check are sent directly to the Department of Immigration.

Character Checks

Applicants for permanent or temporary migration are generally required to provide police certificates to determine whether they are of good character. Certificates are required for each country where the applicant has resided for at least 12 months during the previous ten years.
