Prenatal Care in Azerbaijan

Information about the care and support provided for expectant mothers in Azerbaijan…

Once a pregnancy has been confirmed the woman can choose a hospital or clinic at which to register for prenatal care and delivery. There are a number of hospitals in Baku with English-speaking staff.

During the initial visit to a gynaecologist, additional visits to a dentist, endocrinologist and general practitioner are usually recommended.

The following tests and analysis will take place before the sixth week of the pregnancy:

  • Ultrasound test (to confirm the pregnancy and determine the estimated date of delivery)
  • Blood tests
  • Haemoglobin and diabetes test
  • Progesterone (hCG) level
  • Blood clotting
  • Urine test

During the second and third trimesters the following tests may also be carried out:

  • Blood tests
  • Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) screening
  • Ultrasound tests
  • Amniocentesis
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
  • Glucose tolerance test
  • Group B Streptococcus (GBS)

Clinics and hospitals usually offer breastfeeding training, which can be organised during prenatal consultations. Pregnant women are also offered a hospital tour prior to the delivery date.
