Opportunities and regulations regarding work for teenagers in Bulgaria...

The minimum legal age to start work in Bulgaria is 16. Exceptions can be made for young people between the ages of 15 and 16 but the work must not be dangerous or strenuous. Also, it should not prevent the person from attending classes at school.

For a minor to be eligible to work, they must have a medical certificate and a permit from the local Labour Inspectorate (Инспекция по труда). They must also have written permission from their parents or guardians.

There are not many opportunities for young people looking for work in Bulgaria. Many teenagers seek jobs in the hotel and catering industries. Seasonal work can be found in one of the many resorts on the Black Sea Coast, accommodation is often provided by the employer.

Working hours

Under Bulgarian law, the working week is 40 hours, 8 hours a day. Depending on the type of job, there may be exceptions but an employee must not work more than 10 hours a day and 48 hours a week.

Employees under the age of 18 may not work more than seven hours a day and 35 hours a week, or between 20:00 and 06:00.


The National Employment Agency or NEA (Агенция по заетостта) provides the unemployed in Bulgaria with information and help when looking for work.

Registration at the local Labour Office Directorate (Бюро по труда) is not obligatory. However, the Labour Offices can provide a number of information services and training courses that may help young job seekers.
