The Bulgarian School System

An overview of the private and state school systems in Bulgaria, plus the typical age-groups for different levels of education...

In Bulgaria there are public/state schools and private educational institutions at all levels – from infant to university years. For state/public schools, parents do not pay fees, however, for state/public crèches and kindergartens a small monthly fee is charged. This fee is fixed by the municipality in which the school is located and is the same for everyone. Both state and private universities charge tuition fees, which will vary depending on the institution.

Bulgarian school levels:

  • Pre-school or Kindergarten (Детски градини): for children aged 3 years to 6/7
  • Primary School (Основно образование и прогимназия): Divided into 2 stages
    • Elementary school: 4 years
    • Pre-gymnasium school: 3 or 4 years
  • Secondary School (Средно образование): 4 years at general secondary education schools (Общообразователни училища), the equivalent of comprehensive schools or 5 years at professional schools/gymnasiums (Професионални училища), the equivalent to grammar schools and sixth form combined in one
  • Higher education (Висше образование): University/college

Crèche/Nursery services (Детски ясли) are provided for toddlers, aged 3 months to 3 years, for a monthly fee.
