Pet Travel and Moving to Bulgaria with Animals

Find out how to prepare your dogs, cats, and other pets for moving to their new life in Bulgaria...

Up to five companion animals (pet dogs, cats or ferrets) may be brought in to Bulgaria for long or short term provided they comply with the requirements: that they have up-to-date rabies vaccinations, a microchip and the official documentation to prove it. In all EU countries, it is a requirement that pets receive the rabies vaccination after the microchip has been implanted.

Animals and the paperwork are checked on entry to the Republic of Bulgaria.
The National Veterinary Medical Service (???????????? ???????????-?????????? ??????) controls the import of live animals. It operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Rabies is endemic in Bulgaria and to be allowed to enter, a pet dog, cat or ferret must have proof of rabies vaccination given no more than 12 months and no less than four weeks before arrival. Vaccinations of pets resident in Bulgaria must be kept up to date with an annual booster.
