Animals Arriving from a Non-EU Country

Find out how to import a dog, cat or other pet animal to Bulgaria from outside the European Union...

In order to enter Bulgaria, an animal must have the following information and documentation:

  • Tattoo (acceptable until 2012) or electronic identification microchip. If the microchip is not an ISO 11784 or ISO standard 11785 compliant chip, it's essential to provide the correct microchip reader/scanner attached to the crate (this situation most commonly affects animals coming from North America)
  • Full details of the animal's owner must be provided: name, address and identification
  • A valid, completed, signed veterinary certificate

The vet preparing the animal for travel must state on the veterinary certificate that they've checked the identification, that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies and that an inactive vaccine in accordance with OIE standards has been produced.
