Voting in Bulgaria

EU citizens may vote in several of the Bulgarian elections. Find details on how to register to vote for local municipal elections in Bulgaria...

The EU treaty (known as the "Maastricht Treaty") gives every citizen in the European Union the right to vote and stand as a candidate in local, municipal and European Parliament elections in the EU country where they are currently resident, under the same conditions as nationals of that country.

In order to qualify to vote in Bulgarian municipal elections, residents need to be over 18 years and have been resident in that municipality for more than four months. Voters need to register to vote and sign the electoral register at least four weeks in advance of the election. The British Embassy of Bulgaria has further information on voting in Bulgarian municipal elections for EU citizens, and provides an English translation of the Bulgarian electoral register form which registering voters must be complete.
