Driving Licence Categories

Details on the categories of driving licence that can be applied for in Bulgaria...

Below is a list of common driving licence categories that can be applied for in Bulgaria:

  • Category AM: For a moped with a design speed of not more than 45 Km/h. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and pass a theoretical and practical exam
  • Category A1: Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity below 125cc, and a power not exceeding 11 kW
  • Category A2: Motorcycles with a power not exceeding 35 kW
  • Category B: For cars, vans and vehicles up to 3.5 tons and up to nine seats. Applicants must be 17 years and 9 months of age before they may begin the driving instruction, but the licence can only be issued once the person has reached 18, even if they successfully complete the driving course before this date
  • Category B1: For small cars with an engine size above 50cc and speed not exceeding 45 km/h, and a weight of no more than 550 Kg. Applicants must be 16 years and 9 months of age but the licence can only be issued once the person has turned 17, even if they successfully complete the driving course before this date
  • Category C: Includes vehicles from category B and those weighing more than 3.5 tons and with more than nine seats. Applicants need a valid category B licence and a certificate proving that they have passed a psychological behaviour test (Психо тест). This is taken at the State Motor Vehicle Inspectorate - DAI (Държавна автомобилна инспекция)
  • Category C+E: This includes vehicles from category C with a trailer of over 750 Kg. The driving examination includes an additional test which requires the applicant to drive the vehicle on a closed circuit. In order to qualify applicants must:
    • Be at least 21 years of age
    • Have passed category C exam at least one year prior
    • Obtain a document from the Bulgarian Traffic Police (КАТ) stating that they have no past road traffic violations
  • Category D: For busses or other vehicles with over nine passenger seats. Applicants must:
    • Be at least 21 years old
    • Have passed Category C exam at least two years prior
    • Have a document from the Bulgarian Traffic Police (КАТ) stating that they have no past road traffic violations
    • Have a certificate proving that they have passed a psychological behaviour test (Психо тест)
