Teenage Pregnancy and Health

Find out about Canada's attitude to teenage sexual health and pregnancy...

The age of consent in Canada is 16 years. There is a close-in-age exception, which allows 14 and 15 year olds to have sex with someone who is less than five years older. If there are elements of dependency or authority to the relationship, or the relationship involves prostitution or pornography, the age of consent is 18.

Teenage pregnancy in Canada is a declining problem. Sex education programmes are implemented provincially to address the problem.

Abortion

In Canada there are no legal restrictions on abortion and there is no abortion policy. Abortion is a federal matter and Canada has one of the most liberal abortion laws in the world. Most Canadians are pro-abortion and believe that it should remain legal; however there is controversy about whether Canada should develop an abortion policy. Access to abortions is by request, through Medicare.

There is plenty of available support for unplanned pregnancies. See the Women's Health Matters website for more information.
