Processing Time for Work Permits

When to expect a Canadian work permit to arrive, and how to check your application status...

Processing times vary according to the country from which an application is made and the information provided in the application. A person should apply at least six weeks prior to the time they wish to start working in Canada. It is also recommended that documents are translated into either English or French where required to speed up processing times. After submitting an application for a Canadian work permit from outside Canada, a person may be asked to attend an interview or go for a medical examination. Medical examinations take place at a Designated Panel Physician. Once all additional criteria have been satisfied, and if the application has been approved, a person receives a letter of authorisation stating that they are allowed to work in Canada. This letter must be shown to immigration officials upon arrival in Canada, along with a valid passport and any required visas. The work permit will then be issued by the immigration official, stating its terms and conditions. A temporary resident visa may also be issued if it was required and applied for.
