Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community in China

Information on groups, social clubs and links for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender men and women in China...

Homosexuality was decriminalised in mainland China in 1997 and was removed from the government’s list of mental illnesses in 2001. Gay marriage is not legal in China, and same-sex unions are not formally recognised.

The age of consent for both gay and heterosexual couples is 14.

Big cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai are, in general, much more accepting of homosexuality than the rest of mainland China, and have a thriving gay and lesbian population. There is still a great deal of social stigma, however, and many gay people may find themselves under pressure to conceal their sexual orientation.
