Higher Education

Information about higher education and the schools available for foreign students in China...

China has over 2,000 universities and colleges with over 20 million students enrolled in higher educational institutes (HEIs). Students can study traditional degree programmes such as Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degrees, as well as non-degree programmes. All programmes are open to foreign students.

State-funded higher education was phased out in 1985 and since then students compete for scholarships based on academic ability.

The competition for international students studying in China is stiff, with the number of foreign students wanting to study in China rising by about 20 per cent annually since the mid-1980s. Many universities also offer degrees in English, so no prior knowledge of Chinese is required. Chinese language programs are also popular.
