Train Travel in Shanghai

Information on the train network, buying tickets, baggage allowances and getting round the city by train...

Shanghai has three main railway stations: Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, and Shanghai South Railway Station.

Most trains from northern China arrive at Shanghai Railway Station. Trains from southern China usually arrive at Shanghai South Railway Station. High-speed trains to Beijing, Hangzhou and Nanjing depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and are called ā€œDā€ trains.

Travel by train is not easy for English speakers as many of the signs are in Mandarin only and service workers usually speak little English. The self-serve ticket booths have an English version, however. Purchasing tickets from these vendors incurs a small fee, but this is less than that of travel agencies.

All three railway stations are conveniently linked to the metro system. Taxi and bus services are also readily available.

Children less than 1.2m can ride for free. Discount tickets can be purchased for children between 1.2m and 1.5m, which are about half the adult fare.
