Nannies and Au Pairs

Most nannies (Niñeras) can be found by word of mouth or through an agency.

Working hours, the number of children and the type of recruitment are some of the factors that determine the cost of a professional nanny.

There are two ways to recruit professional care givers:

  • Through an agency, which establishes a monthly payment. The agency is responsible for covering the salary, benefits and uniforms. If the care giver does not meet the expectations of the family during the trial period (60 days) the agency is responsible for replacing the nanny
  • Independently: the family finds the nanny based on recommendations and determines the salary (within the ranges established by law and based on the candidate's profile)

The most popular kind of childhood care and pre-school education in Colombia are the private Jardines Infantiles (preschools or kindergartens).

There is a variety of choice depending on the location and convenience (near work or home). These institutions provide a good level of education with qualified certified personnel (sometimes bilingual) in a secure and creative environment.

Most Jardines Infantiles have five different age groups

  • Caminadores (1-2 years old)
  • Infantiles (2-3 years old)
  • Parvulos (3-4 years old)
  • PreJardin (4-5 years old)
  • Jardin (5-6 years old)

The costs of these pre-schools vary depending on the services provided, the quality of the facilities, location, and number of children accepted per classroom.
