Costa Rican Addresses

Very few streets outside San José actually have names, so addresses are usually described in relation to local landmarks. For example:

  • Mr. John Smith
From St. Mark's Church, 50m to the west and 100m to the north, gray colored house
    San José, San José, Desamparados
    30508 - Costa Rica

In this case, neighbors or the local postal delivery person could help a new homeowner to determine how to write his/her address. An example is below:

  • Line 1: Name
    Señor John Smith
  • Line 2: Description of house location
De la Iglesia de San Marco 50 metros al oeste y 100 al norte, casa color gris
  • Line 3: Province, Canton, District
    San José, Escazú, San Rafael
  • Line 4: Postcode - Country
    10203 - Costa Rica

P.O. Box addresses follow a more straightforward layout:

  • Line 1: Name of addressee
    John Smith
  • Line 2: Mailbox number
    Apartado 123-4567
  • Line 3: Province, Canton, District
    San José, Escazú, San Rafael
  • Line 4: Postcode - Country
    10203 - Costa Rica
