English-language Cinema in Costa Rica

Cinemas in Costa Rica often show English-language films with Spanish subtitles. Films shown in their original language are listed as subtitulada or Sub. Films that are dubbed are listed as doblada or Dob. Children's films are generally dubbed.

Cinemas in Costa Rica

Cinemas in Costa Rica have a no smoking policy. Some cinemas have a VIP service, which includes waiter service, larger seats, and a wider selection of food and beverages on offer.

Most cinemas have an offer of two tickets for the price of one on Wednesday evenings.

Film schedules

Films schedules are generally listed in the entertainment section of newspapers. However, most of these newspapers are in Spanish. La Nación has one of the most comprehensive movie schedules. The Tico Times, Costa Rica's English-language newspaper, has a movie section, available for its members.

The website Horariodecine.com (in Spanish) has information about almost all of the movie theaters in Costa Rica, including schedules and contact details. Furthermore, individual cinema websites have details about the movies they are showing, and future releases.

Five major companies run the cinemas in Costa Rica. In addition there is one independent cinema, the Sala Garbo. There is also a Multicines Liberia in Guanacaste.

The five main cinema companies are:

Cinepolis: Movie theaters in Terramall Shopping Center (highway to Cartago), and at Multicentro Desamparados. They are quipped with a number of screens, including 3D, a snack bar, café and digital sound system. VIP service is available at Cinepolis Terramall. It is possible to book tickets on the website.

Cinemark: Cinemas in both Multiplaza Escazú (highway to Caldera), and Multiplaza del Este (Zapote, diagonal to the National Registry). Equipped with large screens, 3D screenings, digital sound system, and snack shop. Tickets can be booked online.

Citicinemas: Cinemas in Jaco (Puntarenas) and Grecia (Alajuela). 3D screenings, digital sound system, and a candy shop.

NOVA Cinemas: Cinemas in Avenida Escazú shopping center, in Escazú. VIP service, IMAX, and 3D screenings are available and there is a restaurant and sports bar on site. Tickets can be purchased online.

In addition to the main cinema companies there is also a Multicines Liberia in the Centro Plaza Liberia (Guanacaste) and the Sala Garbo in San José, an independent art house cinema, showing films from around the world.
