Costa Rica’s access to both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea make it an ideal venue for a wide variety of watersports. It is a particular favorite with sports fishing enthusiasts, and marlin, sailfish, tuna and wahoo can be found off the Pacific coast. Popular inland watersports include white water rafting on the Reventazón and Pacuare Rivers and windsurfing on Lake Arenal.

The county’s mountains, volcanoes and rainforests also make it possible to enjoy a wide range of other outdoor activities, such as trekking to the top of the Cerro Chirripó Mountain or taking a zipline canopy ecotour at the Rincón de la Vieja national park, or around the town of Santa Elena, which is next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

Sport is an important part of the cultural and social life in Costa Rica. Whether you like to play or observe sports, and whatever your tastes, you will have the opportunity to watch or take part in a wide range of sporting activities. Football, in particular, is a popular national pastime – at national, local and regional level.
