Ferries in Costa Rica

Ferries are important in Costa Rica for those wishing to cross quickly and easily to the two peninsulas on the country's west coast.

There is a ferry service from the mainland across the Golf de Nicoya to the Nicoya Peninsula. The ferry travels from Puntarenas to Paquera and also from Puntarenas to Playa Naranjo. These ferry services take approximately one hour.

There is also a ferry that sails from Puerto Jimenez to Del Muelle en Golfito across the Golfo Dulce every day at 11:00, returning at 18:00.

On the Caribbean coast boat travel is necessary due to the number of rivers and swamps. There are frequent small boats known locally as canoas, that travel to and from the small towns in the coastal region north of Puerto Limón.
