Train Travel in Costa Rica

Information on getting around the country by train using the Costa Rica rail network...

In 1991 an earthquake destroyed the rail infrastructure on the Atlantic side of the country and the network closed in 1995. In 2000 it was partially reopened by the state-owned railway operator Incofer. Today the rail network is primarily used for cargo.

San José Light Railway

The capital city San José runs a light railway commuter train which links the Pacific Coast, Heredia and San José. It operates from Monday to Friday.

There are plans to complete another line between San José and Cartago by the end of 2012.

Tico Train Tour

The Tico Train tour is operated by America Travel. It runs on Saturdays and Sundays from Estación del Pacifico in San José to Puntarenas.
