The prenatal process, and what new parents should do in preparation for their new baby...
Prenatal Classes
Prenatal classes are offered free of charge in Greek at the Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos General Hospitals.
Some private clinics and hospitals also offer birth preparation classes in English. Information can be obtained at the various establishments directly or from gynaecologists and obstetricians.
Prenatal Baby Screening
The Prenatal Screening Program is offered free of charge to all pregnant women resident in Cyprus by the Center for Preventive Paediatrics, which is a registered non-profit organisation. It was founded in 1988 and has since been a pioneer in the implementation of universal prenatal and neonatal screening programs.
The screening consists of a biochemical examination which is carried out during the first trimester of pregnancy at the Center’s laboratory. This result is taken in combination with a foetal ultrasound measurement and the mother’s age to provide the necessary information in calculating the risk of Trisomy 21 and other chromosomal defects that may have afflicted the foetus.
