Find out about the Danish attitude to teenagers’ health and pregnancy...
Health and sex education are mandatory in Danish schools. The age of consent in Denmark is 15.
Approximately 2,700 teenage girls in Denmark fall pregnant each year. Around two-thirds of these choose to have an abortion. Teenage mothers are provided with visits by a nurse/health visitor, and various kinds of financial support.
Abortions are legal in Denmark up to the end of 12 weeks of pregnancy. Under 18s must have parental consent before having an abortion.
Information and help is available for teenagers from a number of organisations and associations. These include:
- The Danish Family Planning Organisation (Sex & Samfund)
- Præventionsguide (in Danish): Advice and information on contraception
- Abortnet (in Danish): Information on abortion
- Sexlinien: Advice and information on pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, emergency contraception, abortion and sexual assault (in Danish)
